Essential eye tests take approximately 25 minutes and our premium tests about 35–45 minutes. This includes additional assessments carried out by the team as part of a wider eye health examination. You can find out more about how eye tests are valued here.
Who qualifies for a free NHS eye test?
Eligibility includes over 60s, children under 16 (or in full-time education up to 18), individuals with diabetes or glaucoma, and those on certain benefits.
I don’t need an eye test but I think I might have something in my eye – can you see me for that?
Yes, 100%. Dr Basra is accredited to carry out the minor eye conditions service here at Edwards and Walker, which means you can come here for emergency eye care. This includes symptoms such as red eyes/eyelids, gritty or uncomfortable eyes, sticky discharge, sudden loss of vision or ingrown lashes. It also means you don’t have to wait in A&E. Emergency eye care is also paid for by the NHS.
I’ve had my eyes tested somewhere else but didn’t see any glasses I liked. Can to come and have a look at what you have?
Yes, of course, we take outside prescriptions. We just require to see an up-to-date signed prescription.
👩👧👦 Children’s eye tests & appointments
I would like to book my child in for an eye test, will it cost me anything?
No, all children under the age of 16 are entitled to a free NHS sight test.
At what age should I bring my child in to get their eyes tested?
There is no set age for children’s eye examinations. Dr Basra is a children’s specialist and has tested newborns. However, if you have any concerns with your child’s vision we ALWAYS recommend they get checked as early as possible so that we can correct any vision concerns. They DO NOT need to be able to read to have a thorough eye test.
👓 Glasses & sunglasses
What is the turnaround time for glasses?
This all depends on your prescription. We have a lab on site where basic single vision lenses can be glazed the same day. For more complicated prescriptions, certain coatings and progressive lenses (multifocal or varifocal), turnaround time is usually 2-3 weeks.
Will wearing my glasses all the time worsen my eyesight?
No, not at all, wearing your glasses all the time will not worsen your eyesight. In fact, wearing the correct prescription will make your vision clearer. There isn’t any scientific evidence to support the idea that wearing glasses can worsen your eyesight.
Do you offer anything where I can get cover for my glasses?
Yes, we have the EW club. Sign up, pay a small subscription each month and receive free eye examinations, discounts on glasses and comprehensive eyewear cover. You can find out more about the EW Club here.
Can I get prescription sunglasses?
Absolutely, we do prescription sunglasses. Although our in-store range tends to sell-out quick, we have access to a catalogue of frames from all our designers. Just speak to a member of staff for more information.
Am I able to spread the cost of my glasses?
Of course! We offer 0% interest-free finance so you can spread the cost over 1, 2 or even 6 months.
🔎 Lenses
What lenses do you offer?
We offer a wide variety of lenses, from single vision, to occupational lenses and varifocals. A member of our team can talk you through the different lens options available.
My lenses are really thick and heavy, is there anything that you can do?
Yes. We offer lens thinning, which means you can have thinner / lighter lenses. This can be advised based on the most recent prescription given.
I have cataracts, what coatings do you advise on my lenses?
We would usually recommend any sort of UV protection coating on your lenses to block any UV rays hitting the retina. By having a UV coating, it will slow down the progression of the cataracts. You can find out everything you need to know about cataracts here.
What should I use to clean my lenses?
We recommend using a microfibre cloth only to clean your glasses, together with a specialist water-based lens spray. DO NOT use washing up liquid / soap or any sort of detergent as this can strip down the coatings on your lenses. Similarly, avoid wiping with paper towels, clothing or tissue as they can leave particles of dust or dirt on your lenses, which can leave scratches.
🫶 Eye health
How do I know if I need an eye test?
There are usually indicators you need to get an eye test – we cover the 8 most common signs you need an eye test here. However, we always recommend getting your eyes checked regularly, even if you don’t notice any problems, as a standard eye test can detect other, wider health issues you might not be aware of.
How often should I have an eye test?
It’s recommended adults have an eye test every 2 years, however, this can vary based on individual needs.
Once you reach 70 it’s recommended you have an eye test every 12 months.
Children should generally have an eye test every 12 months.
